In brief: Genetic disorders
Chromosomes can be either x or y.
Women have 2 x chromosomes, while males are xy. This means that if there is a problem on an x-chromosome, for women the other x-chromosome may be able to make up for the lost function. If the problem is on the y chromosome, the male will be affected. Women are not affected by y chromosome disorders.
