In brief: Zyrtec (cetirizine)

Zyrtec (cetirizine) has more anti-allergy or anti-inflamatory effects than clariten (loratidine) and is often better for most allergic symptoms.
It does cause drowsiness in some patients. Antihistamines work best when taken at bedtime if you are taking them on a daily basis - as in a pollen allergy or allergy to a pet that lives in your house.

In brief: Zyrtec vs claritin (loratadine)

Claritin is the most ineffective antihistamine ever approved for market.
Its effect is weak and can take a long time to work. But many patients prefer it to zyrtec because it is less sedating (8% vs 13%) still, both ares safe and easy to try. The new version, Clarinex is more different from Claritin than xyzal (levocetirizine) is from zyrtec.
