Obstetrics & Gynecology - Maternal Fetal Medicine

In brief: Pregnancy.

Some pregnancies are afflicted by preeclampsia, a condition of widespread endothelial malfunction under the influence of placental products.
In essence, the placenta never implanted well in the maternal uterus; as the fetus grows the placenta becomes increasingly stressed to provide adequate nutrients to the fetus and the maternal pressures increase. When the disease is severe, convulsions occur.
