In brief: Possibly

Abdominal workouts in general if done incorrectly can cause injury to the back and neck.
Many people use their back and neck to perform the crunch instead of their core and abdominal muscles. This may cause a strain in the mucles around the spine.

The tighter your core abdominal muscles, the better your back will be. Make sure your knees are always bent and put a sock or tennis ball under your chin so that you don't strain your neck.
