In brief: Depression
You cannot convince someone they are depressed.
You can only urge them to get help and then hope they listen to the professional. Be supportive but tell them they need to seek help. Good luck.

In brief: How do you know that
Your assessment of their depression is accurate? Rather than trying to convince the person that they have a particular diagnosis, try encouraging them to get an assessment.
Many feel threatened by psychiatric labels, just point out specifically what the painful behaviors are - & let the person know that there is help. Let the evaluator do the diagnosing & the medical recommending.
