In brief: Real food

"real" food is food that's unaltered from the way it was grown.
Fresh vegetables, fruits, lean meat and fish. Notice i left out sauces, flours, refined anything, soda, sugar, and pretty much everything you find in a grocery store. Eating processed food is like like eating your food "pre-digested". Your gut is supposed to work at breaking food down so you use it slowly. Too fast equals too fat.

In brief: Don't 4get exercise!

The goal is to burn more calories than you consume.
Watch your diet-eliminate junk food and don't over eat. Consider liquids as well-soda, alcohol, etc contains a lot of calories. Exercise multiple times a week. If you find an activity you really enjoy you'll be more likely to engage in that activity. Avoid fad diets that could prevent you from getting adequate nutrition. Make healthy choices!
