Incapacitating true vertigo may be inner ear disease but the latter causes symptoms that usually do not cause such disability.
There are at least 4 causes of inner ear vertigo. 1.) positional vertigo (lasts for less than a minute), 2.) meniere's disease (vertigo may persist for hours. 3.) labyrinthitis (vertigo may last for several weeks) but then goes away. 4.) acoustic tumor (hearing loss).
