The name says it all. As its name implies, hairy tongue looks like, well.. Hair on the tongue. It represents a delayed loss of surface cells, resulting in a lengthening of the numerous "filliform papillae" on the upper tongue surface. The color may vary from yellow-white to black. Dark,long tastebuds. Hairy tongue happens when some of the taste buds on the top of the tongue get very long and discolored. The discolorations can come from food, tobacco and/or bacteria.
