In brief: Abnormal platelet

Function due to deficiency of a metaloproteinase.
Deficiency, usually acquired, of an enzyme that breaks down large multimers of von willebrand factor causes overactivation of platelets leading to intravascular microthrombi that affect the functions of the kidneys, brain, lungs and other organs. It can be treated by transfusing normal donor plasma.
