In brief: Medicine & therapy

Fortunately, there are a variety of effective treatments for depression.
The standard treatment includes medication, and/or psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy). These approaches have been demonstrated to be effective. There are also various brain stimulation therapies (electroconvulsive therapy is the most researched stimulation therapy and has the longest history of use). Ask your doctor.

Dr. Nehrer (healthtap) reminds us that group therapy is also an effective treatment for depression. In a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of group psychotherapy in the treatment of depression, McDermut et al. (2001) showed that 43 out of 48 studies showed statistically significant reductions in depressive symptoms after group psychotherapy. And, 9 out of 48 studies showed no difference between the group and individual therapy. So, groups can be good!
