Is Parkinson's now thought to be mostly caused by environmental factors, genetic factors, or some complex combination of both?

1 doctor agrees

In brief: Combo but not known

The cause of most pakinson's disease is not known.
However, there are some rare genetic factors and also possible environmental factors that are associated with the disease. See for more information: https://www.Michaeljfox.Org/understanding-parkinsons/i-have-got-what.Php.

In brief: Great Question!!

Current thought says all these factors are involved.
Pd is more common in areas with high agricultural chemical use & in those working with heavy metals or toxic chemicals. We also know that genetics are involved with several identified mutations causing higher susceptibility & rare families with dominantly inherited pd. I believe the key & cure of pd will be found using genetic breakthroughs.
