Since all normal hemoglobins of postnatal life contain Alpha chains, homozygous Alpha (0) thalassemia (ie, loss of all four Alpha globin genes) is incompatible with extrauterine life, leading to hydrops fetalis and/or death shortly after delivery, unless blood transfusion and/or hematopoietic cell transplantation can be performed in time.
