In brief: Do not have it

Back surgery is mainly optional.
You should see your pcp for evaluation & medical clearance. For elective surgery you should in best of health!

In brief: Let team know

I would let your surgeon know immediately.
It depends in part on the nature of the procedure you are having and how bad your "cold" is. Sometimes we will elct to proceed with surgery, sometimes we will defer it until the patient is clearly better, but it is always best to know as soon as possible. Thank you for your question.

In brief: Spinal

Have your operation with spinal surgery - do not get a general anesthetic.
Alternatively if you're feeling lousy, you may just want to postpone it.
