In brief: Medicine and therapy
Fortunately, there are various effective treatments for depression.
The standard treatment includes medication, and/or psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy). These approaches have been demonstrated to be effective. There are also various brain stimulation therapies (electroconvulsive therapy is the most researched stimulation therapy and has the longest history of use). Ask your doctor.

In brief: TMS: Another option
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (or tms) is a relatively new, fda-cleared depression treatment for patients unresponsive to an antidepressant medication.
Tms is an outpatient procedure that is effective and has few side effects. It uses simple mri-strength magnetic waves to stimulate a part of the brain that is underactive in depression.
