In brief: Modest wt. loss!
It is a safe drug, which may cause gas.
Acarbose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, the enzyme in your small intestine that chops up starch into sugar, almost immediately. Taking this drug before meals with starch discourages the release of insulin, which is a major cause for obesity. There are a number of reports suggesting modest weight loss, but has been shown to delay onset of type 2 dm.
