Disc herniation is the result of tearing of the ligamentous wrapping arounfd the disc, the annulus fibrosis.
This can result from injury or be spontaneous. There is some evidence that degenerative disc disease can be hereditary. I am not aware of evidence of a heretitary component for disc herniation though. Someone may know otherwise.
