In brief: Both
Currently there three basic classifications: asperger's, autistiism, & pervasive developmental disorders.
But these are somewhat ill-defined & each encompasses a broad spectrum of levels of function. Better definition & classification of autistic spectrum disorders is currently under consideration but is likely to be difficult if not impossible.

In brief: More lumped than
Ever in the new dsm v, but because of research studies that show what one of us " autism experts" calls asperger syndrome another may call pdd-nos.
Since " mind-blindness, "lack of theory of mind & difficulty understanding concepts even if able to remember large amounts of data underlie all autistic disorders, no matter the cognitive level, the lumping is an attempt to get funds & services for all.
