In brief: Rarely yes.
Most deaths from black widows have been either in the extreme young, old or in individuals with other severe medical issues.
If you are bitten, seek medical attention regardless as Antivenin is available if needed.

Brown widow spiders (Latrodectus geometricus) is an invasive species; and, they are "taking over" in Southern California. Although venomous, its bite is not as dangerous as the black widow spider. http://www.latimes.com/news/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-brown-widow-spider-california-20120702,0,4442357.story

In brief: Fatalities are not
Common. It is rare for a healthy person to die from a black widow spider bite.
An infant, elderly person or someone who already is struggling w a serious illness is more likely to have a poor outcome. You can call the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 if you are bitten. Here is an excellent nih article: http://www.Nlm.Nih.Gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002858.Htm.
