How long does it take for symptoms of avian flu to kill a bird?

In brief: 10 days or never

Avian flu (h5n1) will run its course in birds in about ten days - if the bird survives (and most do) they will not be shedding virus after approx 10 and are then no longer a risk.
Unfortunately the flu virus is fairly stable and a person can get infected after simply touching a contaminated surface. Fortunately, we haven't had big outbreaks of avian flu in the west (yet!).
