I woke up in the middle of the night because I had stopped breathing. Could this be sleep apnea?

Yes. Gasping for breath is one of the signs of sleep apnea. So is snoring, and being tired during the daytime. Sleep apnea is a serious disease. Talk to your doctor and have an overnight sleep study to diagnose this. You could save your life.
Absolutely. It is impossible to correctly self-diagnose one's own sleep apnea (sa). Usually it is the bed partner who complains about the robust snoring, gasping, choking, or cessation of breathing. The sleeper just sleeps through it. But sometimes, if the sa is bad enough, you can have an episode that does startle you awake. You are describing a sa event. See your md to get a sleep study and treatment.
Sleep apnea. Definitely could be i would get a sleep test as soon as possible!
