About 30-40% of dog bites will become infected requiring antibiotics but more importantly, the area of the bite needs to be evaluated for extensive cleaning and possible repair and tetanus status needs to be determined.
Also, the dog's immunization status needs to be known. For an unknown status, rabies may need to be considered depending on whether you area is known to harbor canine rabies.
