In brief: He should continue
He should definitely continue the medication.
If the medication is keeping him normal, he should not stop it or he can have another episode. In the longterm, the dose should be decided by him and his doctor and if he ever decides to come off of it, it should be done slowly.

In brief: Continue meds
Bipolar is a complex diagnosis with both depressive and excited periods.
Your father should follow his doctors directions. If he does not like the doctor's directiions he should find a better one but he should not self medicate.
