In brief: Septoplasty
Most patients are under general anesthesia for a septoplasty, Your surgeon will restore your septum to the midline using different techniques which may include removal of cartilage and bone.
The incisions are closed and some surgeons place splints inside the nose while others may use packing.

In brief: Minimal problems
Most people have some swelling and usually have packing in the nose which can affect breathing for a few days or until the pack is removed.
There is generally minimal to no discomfort and only some minor restrictions like no strenuous exertion, hanging the head down or blowing the nose for a week or two. Salt water sprays can help with dryness/crusting.
