In brief: It Varies

Child abuse definitely puts a person at risk for emtional difficulties in adult life.
There is also an increased risk of problems in relationships, drug and alcohol problems, and the possibility of engaging in abusive behavior as an adult. However, there are no guarantees. Some children face significant abuse but do well as adults. Some of this can be affected by proper treatment.

Dr. Holmes has once again given a superb answer. It is impossible to sort out the effects of physical abuse versus growing up in a horrible environment. Both leave intrusive and unwanted memories; the latter forces a child to develop behavior patterns in order to survive that serve poorly in the adult world.
