Would augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) XR work for if suspected an ear infection?

In brief: Yes,but...

It would, but for the average middle ear infection, it has a much broader spectrum of activity than is needed.
A narrower spectrum antibiotic will work and is usually safer.

Augmmentin is a good choice for an ear infection if their is a high level of penicillin resistance in your geographic area. In Texas, many persons bring Amoxil home when they visit Mexico; where it can be purchased OTC. Because of inappropriate use, Amoxil has less than 50% effectiveness in places like San Antonio.
