In brief: Sleep hygiene

First, you must make sure that your sleep hygiene is allowing you to fall asleep.
Make your time to bed and get up the same time every day. No tv or reading in bed. No clock visible. No bright light before bed and no strenuous physical activity or caffeine for 4 hours before. If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes don't stay in bed; get up and do something quiet till you feel sleepy.
