In brief: Relaxation breathing

Have you tried relaxation breathing? If you want to avoid medication for your panic attacks, i highly recommend the book: the relaxation response by benson.
Read the entire book, then start doing the exercises as contained in the book. Start with 5 minutes twice a day working up to 10 minutes twice a day. Your panic should resolve. You will be able to stop an attack with the book's techniques.

In brief: Evaluation & Therapy

At age 42 you may have had the usual medications and relaxation techniques which are effective for many people.
It always is important to rule out any underlying medical problems which can cause panic symptoms. It may be that short term treatment techniques won't work for you . You should consider being evaluated for insight oriented therapy that may help you get to the root of your panic symptom.
