Can low thyroid hormone symptoms like hair-loss be reversed?

Allopecia. If scalp hair loss called allopecia is due to hypothyroidism one can reverse it by normalizing thyroid function. Most of the time hypothyroidism is due to an autoimmune disorder called hashimotos disease. Allopcia is an accompanying autoimmune disorder and may not be due to low thyroid hormones. It's an association -- not causation.
Yes. Usually when thyroid hormone levels are stablized the hair loss tends to be reversed. This may take weeks to months.
Yes. But it takes time to recover losses from hypothyroidism. It's most serious consequence is in the newborn when undetected causing a cretin, a form of idiocy due to absence of thyroid during the neonatal and infancy period. My all a's athletic daughter could have been one, but all neonates were screened whee she was born.

What kinds of tests are a ferritin level, thyroid hormone, free testosterone level? Tests for hair thinning or hair loss.

Overall health. Every man should have an occasional serum ferritin since hemochrmoatosis is common, deadly and treatable. Testosterone assays are of little value in a baldness workup despite what you may hear, but worthwhile in an erectile dysfunction workup. Hypothyroidism leads to a non-male-pattern baldness and thyroid screen is worthwhile every few years. Read more...

Thyroid removed level at. 406 now on meds have a lot symptoms of low thyroid, hair loss and breakage dry skin constipated doc says fine y I feel bad?

Not sure. Could be that you are underdosed in your thyroid replacement hormone. I am not sure if 0.406 is your current TSH or not. If it is, it is hard to explain. If this doesn't clear up in a short while you might consider repeating your TSH and using a small dose of t3 (liothyronine). Read more...

My TSH fluctuates goes to 5.5 with 12.5 mcg comes down to. 27 on 25mcg. Anti thyroid antibodies +ve. How to titrate. Only hair loss no hypothyroid symp?

Dosing. Hi. Most systems are not that sensitive! I would suggest trying 12.5 mcg on even days of the month and 25 mcg on odd days of the mont. This will give you an average daily dose of 18.75 mcg, and should give you a nice, normal TSH. But to reiterate, most systems are not that sensitive. Make sure you're well equilibrated (dose at least 6 weeks) before testing. Good luck! Read more...

I'm symptomatic of hypothyroid (hair loss, fatigue, cold, fuzzy head...) TSH=3.73 and T4=14. My Dr has said it can't be Thyroid. Is this correct?

Agree w/ your MD. Its not likely your thyroid that holds you down. Lots of other disturbances can mimic same symptoms (depression, polycystic syndrome, vitamin /mineral deficiencies, even simply stress overload can do) . More work is needed to get it figured out. Good luck! Read more...
