In brief: As long as it takes!

Acid reflux tends to be a chronic problem. I typically recommend patients continue with treatment as long as their symptoms persist.
There are some downsides to treatment which can include malabsorption of calcium so over treatment is possible.

In brief: Hard to say

If your heartburn symptoms are infrequent and episodic, then likely no.
If you have chronic symptoms however i.e. 3 or more attacks of reflux a week, then you may need to remain on maintenance therapy. Ask your doctor to be sure.
