In brief: Sometimes

In most cases no.
Occasionally a condition called barretts esophagus can occur and this can ultimately lead to cancer. This occurrs in an unpredictable fashion but is most commonly seen in middle aged caucasion males.

In brief: Concur

Agree with dr. Vinson.
I would add that in addition to barret's esophagus, prolonged acid reflux may cause esophageal scarring and/or stricture. Further, chronic acid reflux may contribute to progressive esophageal dysfunction.
