In brief: Replacement
It is a type of shoulder replacement where we only replace a thin layer of the bone and overlying cartilage in a attempt to preserve the bone underneath.
It can be performed in cases where the arthritis has not deformed the underlying bone. In general, it may allow more normal function. However, in reality, the results have been very similar to traditional shoulder replacements.

Shoulder resurfacing in my practice has a small list of indications. It is typically reserved for younger patients 40-60 that are still working and wanting to perform manual labor. It can also be utlized for cases of avascular necrosis. The dilemma is that when doctors use this for arthritis the outcomes are debatably poor. Dr. Copeland would argue that it is successful for shoulder arthritis but most peer reviewed studies would challange this and support a full shoulder replacement as the best treatment as this is a two sided disease (ball and socket). A patient must understand the surgeon's indications and ask questions or get a second opinion if have any concerns.

I would agree with Dr. Badman here. If you are searching for the most reliable pain relief, a total shoulder arthroplasty is likely the best option.

In brief: For arthritis
Shoulder resurfacing is an open surgery which involves placing a metal component over the arthritic humeral head (ball).
It is done to reduce the pain from arthritis. It is done less commonly than the standard total shoulder replacement, but is a great option for young, active patients without much glenoid (cup) wear.
