Manage Pain, stretch. The most common treatments for osgood-schlatters include rest/ activity modification, ice, compression, anti-inflammatories, massage and therapeutic stretching that focuses on the muscles of the upper leg (hamstrings & quads). Individuals with osgood schlatter may partipate in activity to limits of pain tolerance without concern.
Osgood schlatter. Try to avoid running or jumping until the pain subsides. Use an anti-inflammatory pain medication.
Depends. In growing kids, we usually wait till the child stops growing unless their is a fracture or unrelenting pain. In mature patients, childhood osgood schlatters can leave a prominent bump or residual ossicles (bone pieces) that can be removed if it really bad.
Osgood-Schlatter. This disorder is not uncommon in teens going through rapid growth. So if you are a teen and have been growing lots recently, certainly could develop os. Pain is at the bony prominence on your tibia (lower leg bone) just below the knee. More common in athletes, but can happen to any teen. Use ice and Ibuprofen when symptoms are acting up, and if persists despite that, see your doc.
See your doc. After growth plates close in adolescence, this condition will heal spontaneously. Most patients if treated conservatively with rest and NSAIDS will be pain-free within 12 months. This is a self-limiting condition but can last years if not treated appropriately. Some adults who had severe disease in adolescence will continue to have some knee pain (usually with kneeling) many years into adulthood.
