Not really. It's always caused by elevated bilirubin.
Types of jaundice. Jaundice = bilirubin in the bloodstream. This can happen becaus the healthy liver is presented with too many precursors to handle metabolism properly, because the liver is 'sick' or because the liver's excretion pathway is blocked. At times the jaundice is minor and fluctuates secondary to an enzyme problem that is of no ongoing concern. Without exception a reason for the jaundice must be sought.
