Could I have a partial ACL tear if my knee wants to buckle to one side?

In brief: Hard to judge
Buckling to one side does not sound as much like an acl injury.
It sounds more like an mcl or lcl injury depending on which side it is buckling on. The acl is more involved in a rotational pivoting restraint than a buckling one.

The sensation that a knee wants to give way can be caused by a ligament injury. Other causes include a problem with your hip or even a problem from the lower back e.g. herniated disc. The best way to make the diagnosis is with an MRI of the knee that would demonstrate a ligament tear if its present.
