In brief: Pectus surgery/pain

Pain is common after the surgery (minimally invasive as well as open surgery).
For the first few days, patients will receive strong pain medicine in the vein (through an iv) and/or through a catheter placed in the spine (an epidural). After that, pain is usually managed with medicines (narcotics and nsad) taken by mouth. Hospital stay can be up to 7 days for pain management.

In brief: Depends

The older the patient, the more calcified are the ribs.
The pain will endure longer in the older patients. By 3-4 weeks the pain will be less and can be managed with motrin-level pain reiievers.
