Is cetirizine good for children with asthma and runny nose (no fever)?

It depends. If the runny nose is due to allergies, Cetirizine (zyrtec) will most likely help. The medication is an anti- histamine that provides 24 hour allergy relief. However, the runny nose may be a symptom of a common cold. This medication may help in if that is the case, but maybe not. Has the child ever been allergy tested? That information would help to determine if allergies are the cause.

My five year old has been with high fever of up to 104. Shesuffers from asthma and gets seizures from high fever. She also has a runny nose, is coughing and is vomitingnon-stop. What should I do?

Treat fever now. Treat high fever in children with febrile seizures aggressively. Use Ibuprofen & Acetaminophen & tepid baths. Acetaminophen suppositories are useful if your child is vomiting. Fever is usually due to viral illnesses but the higher the temperature (& 104f is high) the greater the likelihood of a bacterial infection or serious illness. This one sounds like pneumonia. Take her to her doc. Asthmatics seem to get hit worse with episodes of bronchitis. So if she has a productive cough, she may be experiencing asthmatic bronchitis - or even a sinus infection. You can safely encourage her to drink plenty of fluids, or ask the pharmacist for an over-the-counter medicine to liquify secretions (expectorant). But she really needs to be seen if she's not improving. Good luck. Lgromko. Read more...
