How does interferon work as a treatment for hepatitis?

Immune modulator. In the treatment of hepatitis C viral infection, interferon works as an immune modulator or immune stimulator, but must be used simultaneously with other drugs such as Ribavirin and telapravir (incivek (telaprevir)) or bocepravir (victrelis). Interferon used by itself has virtually no effect in hepatitis c. The addition of the direct-acting antivirals (incivek (telaprevir) and victrelis) has greatly improved the response.
Interferon. Although the antiviral, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of interferon-a are thought to contribute towards its beneficial effects in patients with chronic hepatitis c, the exact mechanism of action of this cytokine in hepatitis c has yet to be established. After administration, interferon-a binds to high-affinity receptors on the target cell surface which activates a cascade of rea.
