I think by blood poisoning you are referring to septicemia.
Diabetics usually have worse infections than a non diabetic so they are more susceptible to a worse infectious process particularly if they are uncontrolled diabetics or if they 'didn't seek treatment right away because of not knowing they had a problem due to neuropathy. It is possible but not common.
