In brief: Individual decision

This can indeed be a very tough decision -- and very individual also.
People can become quite distressed about it, including the medical team. This can escalate further when the patient needing blood is a child or adolescent under 18. Medical teams want to save lives where they can, and provide life-preserving treatments. Unfortunately at this time, there is no fda-approved blood substitute.

Folks faithfully secure in their religious beliefs, and others cave under the choice of transfuse or lose life.
By the way there are survivors and deaths with each choice.
