In brief: Airway scarring
During the lifesaving efforts to keep a premi alive, the oxygen delivered under pressure can irritate & cause thickening of the tissue.
Over time this thickened tissue builds up and is seen on x-ray, while the infant continues to slowly improve. Over months and years the lung can heal itself, but some residual lung weakness is possible for years.

In brief: Breathing difficulty
Most infants who develop BPD are born more than 10 weeks before their due dates, weigh less than 2 pounds (about 1,000 grams) at birth, have breathing problems.
High oxygen and ventilatory pressures to keep lungs open.Infections that occur before or shortly after birth also can contribute to BPD.Infants that recover may have problems with asthma. More severe cases may require ventilatory support
