In brief: Manic Depressive
Mania and melancholia, manic-depressive, bipolar are all the evolutions of a diagnosis.
There is a spectrum of changes from extreme low moods to high extremes which is episodic, some time clearly distinct other times mixed phases can occur. Timely treatment can prevent severe damage. Seek help as there are lot better treatments available.

In brief: Manic depressive
Bipolar disorder is also called manic depressive disorder because it includes manic and depressive episodes.
Manic episodes include an inflated sense of self worth, decreased need for sleep, increased activiety. Depression is a decreased sense of self worth and decreeased energy, interest, and ambition and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide. See my health guide for more information.
