First, i think it would be imperative that you find out what is wrong.
Particularly, since you like to be active, don;t wait until your problem worsens. Maybe a brace will suffice, maybe you need to have a surgical procedure to fix the problem. Sometimes an orthotic can help reduce the strain on the knee particularly if the pain is on the medial aspect or inner side of the knee.

If you are a serious runner and have not strengthened your quadriceps muscle(the one above your knee) then the pain you are describing could be from your knee cap not staying in propper alignment.
The quadriceps muscle helps keep the knee cap in its place. Also, if you are running on the street make sure you reverse direction everyday as the street is slanted toward the curb.

If you pronate your feet while you jog, you will need shoes designed for pronation. If you are new at jogging, your knees can hurt while you build muscle around your knees. You may need to decrease mileage while you build muscle.
