In brief: Salmonella carrier

Typhoid fever, or enteric fever, is caused by a number of salmonella strains.
Chronic carrier state is defined as persistence of bacteria in stool or urine for >1 year. Up to 4% of patients with s.Typhi become carriers--highest in women, with biliary or urologic abnormalities (biliary or kidney stones), or concurrent bladder infection with schistosoma. Sometimes gallbladder removal is needed.
