In brief: Its very safe!

Efforts by anesthesiologist to improve the safety of anesthesia has made general anesthesia very safe today.
Risks can include medication reactions, damage to teeth or eyes, nerve injuries, heart attack, stroke and death, however for most patients this risk is extremely remote. Certain medical conditions make anesthesia more risky such as obesity, heart conditions, diabetes, etc.

In brief: Few and infrequent

General anesthesia is extremely safe with a mortality rate of ~1 in 250, 000.
By comparison, your chances of being in a car accident are around 1 in 17, 000. And we get in our cars many times a day! advances in anesthetic care, management, monitoring and drugs over the past 20-30 years have made anesthesia very safe. Risks-range from minor as in failed IV to major (rare) like cardiac events.

In brief: Pain and Nausea

Most of the anesthetic agents disappear very quickly.
That is why patients only remember the post anesthesia care unit issues. The main postoperative problems that patients experience are pain and nausea. Both of these are easily treatable by an alert pacu staff. The risk of death under anesthesia is minimal, in fact i tell my patients that they are more likely to die driving to the hospital.
