Nonsurgical therapy. A herniated disc can cause both back pain and leg pain. The majority of patients will get better with non-surgical treatment. Anti-inflammatories are the first line of treatment, such as Ibuprofen or alleve. Prednisone can be utilized for severe pain, but requires a prescription. Physical therapy also can be helpful. Epidural injecitons are helpful for recalcitrant pain.
Exercisesmedications. Most pain from herniated discs will gradually get better in 4-12 weeks with theraputic exercises, anti- inflammatory medication such as Aleve (naproxen) or advil. Occasionally an epidural is needed. Surgery is the last option provided there is no significant muscle weakness, numbness or bowel or bladder problems.
