Injury to the sciatic nerve is not common. The most common cause of pain that is commonly referred to as sciatica is an injury to the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve. These are the nerve roots of L4 thru S3. These are commonly injured by a disc herniation, bony spurs, vertebral stenosis, and instability as the most common causes.
