My mother just had surgery on her stomach and they removed a tumor. What is a gist tumor, and what caused it?

In brief: Gastrointestinal

Stromal tumors are tumors that come from neuroendocrine cells.
How rapidly they divide determines the need for further treatment after surgery. We do not know what causes gist tumors.

In brief: It is a cancer, but

It is a treatable form of rare cancer.
..Gist is a type of sarcoma for which we now have good drugs, medicines which can keep it under check. Go see a medical oncologist or a sarcoma specialist for further advice.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) are rare tumors that may behave in both a benign or malignant fashion. Very small tumors may be observed, but those with concerning features should be removed. Endoscopic ultrasound is often utilized to diagnose these tumors when located in the stomach. It is often difficult to make the diagnosis without surgery due to the location within the muscle layers
