What can the doctor see during a pap test, other than cancer? Any infections that might be detected?

In brief: Pap details

The pap test is specifically done to screen for cancer and pre-cancer of the cervix.
It does not usually pick up infections, although it can. If you think you have an infection, or if you have a new sexual partner or have been exposed to an std, let the doctor know before the pap test so additional appropriate testing can be done. Also, the pap test does not screen for ovarian cancer.
