In brief: Agoraphobia

Driving anxiety is really a form of agoraphobia, which is essentially the fear of experiencing a panic attack while in a setting that would be difficult to escape.
Many people with driving anxiety have suffered a traumatic experience while driving, such as being involved in a car accident. For others, the relationship may not be apparent (the reason being abstract or symbolic of something else).

In brief: Panic attacks

First of all, no worries, panic does not kill people.
Advise you to schedule appointment with psychiatrist to evaluate, rule out organic causes by ordering lab workup, get you on medicine to relieve symptoms, and refer you to counselor to help you find reasons why you had those attacks so you can block them and cope.

In brief: Deeper issues

The immediate fix is to see your pcp to evaluate whether an anxiety medication would benefit you.
The more long term issue is to potentially see if there are other deep rooted triggers and work through those.

In brief: Seek Attention

Panic attacks, by definition, have no specific cause.
The attacks happen unexpectedly and for no apparent reason. So to answer your question, I have no idea why you've had 3 panic attacks on the highway. Panic attacks are not normal. You should contact your primary care physician as soon as possible to discuss this issue. There is safe and effective treatment for panic disorder.
