Does fecal incontinence involve a strong urge to have a bowel movement? Or do you generally expel without warning?

In brief: Either
Fecal incontinence refers to loss of bowel control, which can mean involuntary loss of gas, liquid stool or solid stool.
Some people with bowel incontinence experience fecal urgency or a strong, sudden urge to move their bowels & may not always make it to the toilet. Others cannot sense the urge and soil their undergarments with solid stool w/o awareness.

In brief: Without control
You can have a strong urge but still have control , however if you expel without knowing or without control you have fecal incontinance.

In brief: Either
Fecal incontinence can involve a strong urge to have a bm or may be without warning.
Either can occur. The underlying cause of leaking may determine which is most likely. For example, if their is interruption of the anal sphincter then you may expel without warning.

Fecal incontinence is the involuntary passage or leaking of stool or gas. The problem can be sphincter related (disruption of sphincter or weakness of sphincter secondary to nerve issues). However, the sphincter can be functioning normally and a bowel problem can cause the problem (incomplete evacuation ,fecal impaction or massive diarrhea).
